Fertility Counsellor at St. Ives Specialist Hospital – Opebi, Lagos

St. Ives Specialist Hospital is recruiting a full-time Fertility Counsellor at its Opebi branch in Lagos to support individuals and couples undergoing fertility treatment. The position focuses on emotional wellbeing, reproductive-health counselling and collaborative patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Provide individual and couples counselling to patients coping with infertility, fertility-related stress and emotional distress.
• Support informed decisions about fertility treatment options, including IVF, egg or sperm donation, surrogacy and adoption.
• Conduct psychological assessments for patients involved in third-party reproduction, including donors and surrogates.
• Teach coping techniques, stress-management approaches and ways to protect emotional wellbeing throughout fertility treatment.
• Work with doctors, embryologists and other healthcare colleagues to deliver coordinated, holistic support.
• Organise or facilitate support groups and educational workshops for people facing fertility challenges.
• Keep accurate patient records and protect confidentiality in line with ethical and legal requirements.
• Maintain current knowledge of reproductive psychology, infertility counselling practices and developments in fertility treatment.

Qualifications and requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work or a related discipline.
• Fertility counselling certification is preferred; experience supporting patients undergoing fertility treatment is also acceptable.
• Good understanding of reproductive medicine, assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and the psychological effects of infertility.
• Excellent communication, active listening and empathetic counselling skills.
• Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and cultural awareness.
• Experience delivering counselling sessions and facilitating support groups.
• Ability to maintain secure, confidential and accurate patient documentation.
